Our private, serene, and truly Old Hawaiʻi off-grid home<br /><br /><b>The space</b><br />Escape to our one-of-a-kind off grid jungle home. It is tucked away on 10 lush acres in the quiet, rural community of Waa Waa on the east side of the Big Island. As you wind down the old red road through a tunnel of 150+ year old mango trees, time slows down and island magic begins.<br /><br />For us, off-grid living is living done right: solar-powered, rainwater-fed, and surrounded by thriving food plants and trees of citrus, avocado, mango, banana, papaya, cacao, coffee, and endless tropical surprises. We harvest daily from our gardens and orchards, and we can put together a garden bowl for you upon request. ($30)<br /><br />In coming here you are coming to stay in our off grid home, on land which we also live much of the year. We rent it out part time to make some extra money, and live there part time when we don’t. We invite people who are looking for a peaceful experience, considerate and respectful of our space, recognizing it’s our home not a hotel, and conscientious that we are off grid, where power and water are resources to care for and not endless. Of course, we are well supplied but a little interest to be aware to turn lights and faucets off goes a long way. <br /><br />The house itself is very fun and interesting - open-air, screen-wrapped doors all around, it’s designed to catch every breeze. Trade winds A/C. It has high ceilings, hand-crafted native Ohia wooden posts and rails, colorful mosaic tile work, and playful details that create a relaxing earthy artsy feel. It’s natural and simple but still has a comfortable “it’s all taken care of” way. Sunlight pours in through skylights, ocean breezes flow freely, and the sounds of birds, coqui frogs, and crashing waves become your soundtrack.<br /><br />It’s just a 5 minute drive down our dirt road that brings you to hidden ocean spots for catching the whales or watching the sunrise paint the sky over the Pacific. No crowded beaches here—just you, the ocean, and the occasional honu saying hello.<br /><br />What to expect:<br />- Fully equipped kitchen with gas range, fridge, and all the cookware you need to turn produce into meals.<br />- Comfortable indoor/outdoor living: spacious living room with cozy sectional, dining area that opens to the jungle, and a breakfast bar perfect for morning coffee.<br />- 3 unique sleeping areas: a dreamy window-nook daybed with tile alcove, a main level bedroom with a queen bed and an additional futon sofa, and a private loft bedroom with king bed and jungle views. Can support 6 guests.<br />- Hot outdoor shower under the stars + indoor bathroom with hand-laid tile.<br />- Reliable Starlink Wi-Fi<br />- Solar power and plenty of water, but with a mindful rhythm of living with the land— thankful for the sun and thankful for the rain. <br /><br />We (your hosts) live quietly on the same 10 acres in a separate part of the property. If you’ve ever wanted to wake up in a towerhouse-like home and fall asleep to the symphony of the jungle—this is it.<br /><br />Come slow down, unplug (mostly), and live the sustainable island life we’ve poured ourselves into. 🌿🌊✨<br /><br /><b>Guest access</b><br />- The home is on the same property as our home and greenhouse that only owners have access to. <br />- There is a map provided that designates where you are welcome to roam and where we ask that you do not. <br />- It should be noted the home is independent, private and with its own access.<br />- There is agriculture and gardens all around the land. You are welcome to look around and enjoy, but please do not take from our garden or our fruit trees and plants.<br /><br /><b>Other things to note</b><br />- We do not provide coffee so please come prepared. A French press and kettle are available. <br />- There is a fee of $25 per night per guest after 4 guests. Max number of guests is 6, and that includes infants. <br />- We live in a small farming community with neighbors with chickens and roosters that sometimes walk free around the property. The roosters can sometimes be heard in the morning from a distance. We also have a cat that lives on the land but does not access the house. You are welcome to pet them or shoo them away.<br />- There are geckos and the occasional large cockroach (B-52s they are called) that live in all homes in Hawaii including ours, that is just how it is here. Feel free to relocate the geckos and kill the roach if you see one and you would like to. <br />- During the night through morning there are coqui frogs in the forest trees making their calls, they are sweet serenaders and part of the forest<br />- Please be aware that our home is off-grid so do not leave lights or fans running when not in use, or water running unnecessarily.<br />- The house is surrounded by screens in most directions in doors and windows and they dot not lock. Many of them do not have curtains as result. The home is very private however with forest all around. <br />- There are wild pigs that occasionally roam the lands late at night (~8 pm to 5 am) feeding. They are not dangerous and simply run away if seen. We do trap them on occasion to harvest the meat and for garden compost.<br />- This home does not lock.
