The home has a fully-upgraded kitchen with new appliances. Exclusive use of the back deck sauna is dedicated to this upper flat.

The space
Hale Kahoa is located in the Honoli'i subdivision, Hilo's finest oceanfront living. Less than a mile to downtown Hilo, 10 minutes to the airport and short drive to a number of local sites to see. A 3 minute walk down our street takes you to Honoli'i Beach Park. Beyond that is an amazing tropical canopy that is perfect for a daily walk. But there's also no need to leave--hang out by the pool or relax on one of the 3 decks that come with the unit. Sit and watch the sky change colors from sunrise to dusk. Waves crash all day; coqui frogs sing every night. The swing chair is the most popular seat to watch the waves.

The house is very large, over 2600 sq.ft, with high ceilings in an open floor plan for the living areas. Expansive ocean views from most areas of the house.

Kitchen: Koa wood cabinets, full-sized appliances, microwave and toaster oven, garbage disposal. Amenities and supplies cover basic needs, and we can also help with special requests if you can give us advance notice.

Dining area: Large dining table seats 8-10, second table can be set up (folding chairs in main bedroom closet), as well as a breakfast counter in kitchen, and remote-controlled fan/light.

Living room: Swing chair, loungers, 8 person couch, with an additional queen-sized mattress sofabed (very comfortable) that sleeps two, 55-inch TV with digital channels (Spectrum) and internet connection to let you sign-in to your streaming services.

Main bedroom: Very large room that feels like its own studio: King sized hybrid mattress, 55 inch TV, very comfortable Queen sofa-sleeper, connected to a very large en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower and tub; access to two decks (one includes a sauna), blackout curtains, ceiling fans/lights with remote controls.

Second bedroom: Hybrid queen mattress, closet has been converted to a fun "lounge nook," connected to the second bathroom directly from the bedroom.

Lanai (porch): seats that look to the pool or ocean.

Pool: remodeled in October 2021, has a bahama (seating in shallow water) area and plenty of poolside lounging areas. The pool is shared with the other units, but priority is given to our Airbnb guests.

Yard: very expansive grassy yard with unblocked ocean views. There is one service day a week where workers will in the yard which is in sightline of the ground floor apartment.

We provide linen (including beach towels), basic bathroom amenities, and can there is a pack-n-play, high chair and bbq grill already on hand. Parking is available in our gated driveway that we share with our guests. We do recommend a local car rental company if you plan to explore the Big Island (they aren't kidding when they say big).

We encourage guests to research and expect that we live on the ocean in a tropical climate--Hilo is the more humid side of Big Island, which we love for the soft air, but can mean more rainfall. Birds, geckos and insects are common and will occasionally sneak close to the house. Though they are harmless, we take great pains to keep our house pest-free and pride ourselves on keeping a clean home. Coqui frogs are now a characteristic of HIlo, they are never seen but gently sing every night for a few hours starting at dusk. Expect to fall asleep to the sound of waves every night... and every day is a chance to watch the sun start a new day if you want to wake up that early!

The lower unit is a one-bedroom flat that may have occupants, who may be the owners or the owners' guests. The only shared common areas are the driveway; the pool and yard will be used by others only if you are away from the house. Interactions will be limited as there are separate entrances, much like at a resort with multiple units. If you would like the entire property for exclusive use, it is possible to rent both units (there is a separate listing) for a group stay. Entrances are separated, and there is a laundry downstairs that will be for the upstairs guests (on housecleaner days it might be occupied).

Guest access
Rental cars are strongly recommended on the Big Island, as public transportation options are very limited. It's possible to walk to downtown but the unpredictable weather (it always rains a little bit in Hilo) might make it difficult for errands. There is one designated parking space on the property; plenty of street parking on our block.

The house location is very convenient--just off a short road off the main highway, and in a very safe neighborhood. Parking is beyond the private gate so out of public access.

Other things to note
Hilo is known for as the cooler and wetter side of the island. Rain is common, but often turns into full-sun. We love our tropical weather, which is humid and ever-changing. This is Hawaii and we do have occasional bugs and geckos that may enter the home. We provide bug spray if needed, but there is no way to completely shut out nature where we live. :)

The house is airy, and feels magically close to the ocean. It's comfortable and decorated with local artists, but not overly formal so that it invites you to plop down and relax. We provide all the basic amenities.

Please note we do not have air conditioning or heaters. (Once you see how spacious and tall-ceilinged the house is, and how many windows, you can see why). It does get hot during the warmer months--fans are in all bedrooms and the living room, but temperatures might be high in the warmest months. Extra standing fans are provided. Please note we do not give refunds due to the heat.

The pool is not heated. The pool maintenance expert comes every Friday to service the pool. We also have regular yard maintenance, during which the yard and pool use might be inconvenienced. The housecleaner will be using the downstairs laundry and supply area (which is off limits to upstairs guests) but never intrusive and will not enter the upstairs area.

Registration Details
STVR-19-364062
